We finished the presentations over Vietnam first thing. Presenters emphasized that we didn't win in Vietnam for various reasons. Among them: a) There were no set battle lines in this war; b) We weren't used to fighting in the jungle along with the monsoon rains; c) The enemy easily blended into the civilian population and we couldn't tell who was the enemy and who wasn't; d) We used Agent Orange & napalm to clear the vegetation but we drove the very people we were supposed to be helping from their homes and villages; e) American arrogance was a factor too. We thought we could just show up and the VC would submit to our authority.

After the presenters finished, the kids took the Quiz over Vietnam.

We finished highlighting Chapter 20, The Progressive Era, on our Brinkley text.

Then we discussed the Elisabeth Perry's essay in Oates, called, "Why Suffrage for American Women was not Enough." Perry claims that the 19th Amendment was not enough to guarantee women equal access to professional jobs or access to the ranks of political parties because long-held prejudices and discrimination persisted after the passage of the 19th Amendment. She focused on four individuals to make her point: Belle Moskwitz, Eleanor Roosevelt, Frances Perkins and Mary Dewson.

I reminded the kids that they will take a short Quiz over the essay next time.

Our focus of the class was to watch and analyze clips of the 2004 movie, Iron Jawed Angels. It is the story of Alice Paul and the non-violent tactics of the National Woman's Party in gaining women the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

With any time left over, the students will finish their Quizzes over the Progressive Era.
