I began class by reviewing what we have all ready covered concerning the Civil War. Then Cole Carlson presented the rest of his Power Point over the Civil War and finished covering Brinkley's Chapter 14.

When he finished presenting, I reviewed one more time with the students. Then the students completed the Quiz over the Civil War. Any questions on the Quiz that were not covered in the presentation, Cole looked up and answered them for us. Students were asked to complete the rest of the Quiz outside of class or during SRB.

I reminded the next group that they should be ready to present next time and that they should get me their Power Point if they want me to print it off.

Then I gave the students the rest of the class period to work on their Power Point presentations. They worked in groups and individually to read their assigned chapter and begin making slides for their respective unit in the 19th or 20th Century.

When everyone finished the Chapter 9 Test, we discussed Maury Klein's essay, "The Lords & the Mill Girls." The essay was about the girls that worked in the Lowell textile mills and the conditions they endured.

I will give the students a quiz next time over the essay & the things we discussed. Then we will begin summarizing Chapter 10, 11, & 12.

With a half hour left in class, we changed our task to discussing the Oates essay on Henry Clay. After the discussing the essay, the students completed the Quiz over this reading.

I began class by handing out the registration for the dual credit through Northern State University. I reminded the kids that it is due on Friday, 1-11-13.

Then I handed back papers from the first semester & had the kids file them in their AP Binder.

After that, I introduced the Age of Jackson & we discussed Robert Remini's essay over Jackson. We discussed whether he really was for the "common man" or if he was just an opportunist! We also discussed what things the newly organized Democratic Party did in order to get its information and ideas out to the masses of people & how this constrated with the founding fathers & their idea of the necessity of political parties.

When we finished, the kids completed the Quiz over the Robert Remini essay. They handed it in when finished.

I handed out the Brinkley Chapter 9 Notes but we did not have enough time to get the chapter started since the kids used the rest of the time finishing the Remini Quiz.

I reminded them to get Brinkley's Chapter 9 read, if not all ready done so.

I began class by reviewing what we have all ready covered concerning the Civil War. Then Danny & Joe presented the rest of his Power Point over the Civil War and finished covering Brinkley's Chapter 14.

When he finished presenting, I reviewed one more time with the students. Then the students completed the Quiz over the Civil War. Any questions on the Quiz that were not covered in the presentation, Joe & Danny looked up and answered them for us. Students were asked to complete the rest of the Quiz outside of class or during SRB.

I reminded the next group that they should be ready to present next time and that they should get me their Power Point if they want me to print it off.

After that, I introduced the Age of Jackson & we discussed Robert Remini's essay over Jackson. We discussed whether he really was for the "common man" or if he was just an opportunist! We also discussed what things the newly organized Democratic Party did in order to get its information and ideas out to the masses of people & how this constrated with the founding fathers & their idea of the necessity of political parties.

When we finished, the kids completed the Quiz over the Robert Remini essay. They handed it in when finished.

I handed out the Brinkley Chapter 9 Notes but we did not have enough time to get the chapter started since the kids used the rest of the time finishing the Remini Quiz.

I began class by reviewing what we had learned from last time about Truman's administration.

Then, we read 22-4, "Eisenhower's Policies." This lesson covered "Brinkmanship," the truce in the Korean War, John Foster Dulles, the Suez Crisis, the Taiwan Crisis, the U-2 Crisis, and Sputnik. As I read, the students filled in their notes and we discussed certain points in the text as we went along.

After that, the class watched two video clips, one about Sputnik I and the other on Sputnik II.

I had a webquest worksheet for the students to fill out after that on the events surrounding the launching of Sputnik. One vital question I had for the students was, "Why was the launching of Sputnik so shocking to Americans at the time"? The students worked on this until the class ended.

I emphasized a) The Cold War began before WW II was over; b) The traditional interpretation claims that the Soviets were the aggressors; c) The two super powers after WW II were the Soviet Union & the U.S.; d) The Soviet Union detonated its first atomic bomb in 1949; e) The Communists took over China in 1949; f) Republicans claimed that Democrats were soft on communism because of what happened at Yalta.

After my introductory remarks, we read 22-1 & as I read the students completed their 22-1 Notes.

We finished the class by watching a video clip on Harry S. Truman. We didn't finish it but will do so next time.

Next, we continued our discussion that compared fascism with communism. I had made a Venn Diagram for this and the students filled in the missing information. As they filled in the information, we discussed it. Some of the characteristics we put on the diagram could be seen as we watched Hitler give his first speech after becoming the Chancellor of Germany.

After that, we began Chapter 20 and the students took notes over our discussion & some of the things about World War II I had on my Power Point presentation. We will continue with Chapter 20 next time.

I began class by reviewing what we had learned from last time about Truman's administration.

Then, we read 22-4, "Eisenhower's Policies." This lesson covered "Brinkmanship," the truce in the Korean War, John Foster Dulles, the Suez Crisis, the Taiwan Crisis, the U-2 Crisis, and Sputnik. As I read, the students filled in their notes and we discussed certain points in the text as we went along.

After that, the class watched two video clips, one about Sputnik I and the other on Sputnik II.

I had a webquest worksheet for the students to fill out after that on the events surrounding the launching of Sputnik. One vital question I had for the students was, "Why was the launching of Sputnik so shocking to Americans at the time"? The students worked on this until the class ended.

I reminded them that the Chapter 22 Open Book Quiz would be next time.

I emphasized a) The Cold War began before WW II was over; b) The traditional interpretation claims that the Soviets were the aggressors; c) The two super powers after WW II were the Soviet Union & the U.S.; d) The Soviet Union detonated its first atomic bomb in 1949; e) The Communists took over China in 1949; f) Republicans claimed that Democrats were soft on communism because of what happened at Yalta.

After my introductory remarks, we read 22-1 & as I read the students completed their 22-1 Notes.

I began class by reviewing where we left off from last time. We had started a video clip from Jarod Diamond's latest book, "Guns, Germs, & Steel." His thesis is that the shape of the continents determined who would be the "have's" and who would be the "have not's." Diamond also asked during the video clip, "Why was it that Europeans would come to dominate the world during the 15th & 16th centuries when gunpowder, domesticated animals, and iron-making began in the Fertile Crescent"?

After we finished the video clip, we corrected the worksheet and handed it in.

Then we corrected the 16-2 Notes on the Spanish in America. I took the grade.

I began by telling the class about our objectives for the day. I reviewed from last time about our lessons on the Vikings.

Then, we read 16-2, "Spanish Conquest in the Americas." The lesson covered Cortes' conquest of the Aztecs & Pizarro's conquest of the Incas. As I read, the students completed the notes for this section.

We ended the class by watching a video clip on the Spanish Conquest of the Americas.

I began class by playing a short video off of the Kensington Rune Stone website that gave the background of the stone.

Then we read the article on the stone and as I read, the students completed the worksheet over it.

When we finished the article, we corrected the worksheet and handed it in.

Then we watched a Discovery Channel video clip that told us of the extensive trading network that existed in the 1000's AD and the Oseberg ship. The students filled out a worksheet over this as it played. We corrected it when the video finished and handed it in.

Then we corrected the 16-1 Notes & I took the grade. 16-1 covered Columbus' voyages and other European Explorers who came to the New World.

We watched a video clip called, "Who Really Discovered America"? As the clip played, the students completed the worksheet over it.

I also checked to see who owed me make-up work or grades from previous absences.

I gave them time to finish the notes and work on the study guides.

Then I finished reading the 15-1 Notes. As I read & discussed, the students finished completing the notes for this seciton. The lesson introduced us to Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Rapheal, and Bramante and their works of art.

We watched a video clip on the restoration of the Sistine Chapel conducted by the Catholic Church in 1989.

At the end of class, the students exchanged papers & we corrected the 15-1 Notes and I took the grade.

Then we talked about the Crusades' lasting impact on Europe: They indirectly spurred on the Age of Exploration.

After we finished our discussion & kids were done with the 14-1 Notes, they worked on the 14-1 study guides.
